What is Neonatal Hearing Screening?

Congenital hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects. Its incidence rate is as high as 1 ‰ ~ 3 ‰, and 2-3 million new deaf children are born every year. The hearing loss of deaf children aged 0-6 is severe and extremely severe. Severity is the main cause. Hearing loss in newborns and infants can affect children’s speech, cognition, and emotional development. In severe cases, it can lead to silence and dullness, which can bring heavy burden on families and society through routine physical examination or parental observation. Hearing impairment can only be discovered after the child is 2 years old, the period of rapid language development of children is missed, and the best time to recover is delayed. Losses, through early intervention and early rehabilitation, transform silence without dumbness, and return to normal society.

Normal newborn screening is completed 48 hours after birth and before discharge. Those who fail the screening or miss the screening will be rescreened about 42 days after delivery. Screening methods mainly use transient-induced otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) or distortion products otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). If the rescreening fails, you need to be referred to a child’s hearing diagnosis center for a hearing diagnosis within 3 months.
